High school counselors are provided one day of immersion in the world of cyber security. Through this workshop, the Cyber Defense team demonstrates the benefits of the CyberPatriot competition, as well as the Computer Security and Infrastructure courses taught at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi. The workshop begins with hands-on excercises lead by the Cyber Defense Team to get the counselor's interested. These exercises consist of drills similar to those used by the Team to prepare for the Panopoly competition, which emphasize how attackers might compromise systems and what can be done to stop them. The drills take the form of a competitive games intended to entertain while introducing the linux command line interface, demonstrating the use of vulnerability assessment tools, and teaching cyber security principles. After the hands-on exercises peak interest, counselors are given a seminar providing information about the professional cyber security field and how CyberPatriot helps prepare students for this career. Additionally, the counselors are presented with how classes taught at Texas A&M Corpus Christi are an extension of this curriculum. Counselors are also given information they can use to assist students in career advising at their high schools, including information on the necessary academic preparation required for cyber security careers, the high demand for such professionals, and the competitive salaries offered in industry. Following the seminar, counselors are treated to lunch. Afterwards, the counselors are given an opportunity to question the Cyber Defense Team to obtain answers about career choices, academic opportunities, merits of the University's classes, and benefits of the Team's training.
